Medium Silver Gray - Thorne
Alpacas are shorn once a year, usually in the Spring. The fiber is classified into three categories; 1sts (blanket), 2nds, or 3rds. The blanket is the prime fleece on an alpaca, and is usually finer, more consistent and of a longer staple length. The fiber length is approximately four to six inches long. The blanket consists of fleece from the alpacas shoulder to its hip. The Suri (“SIR-ee”) alpaca fiber is long and flowing and has a unique “dreadlock” fleece quality, with the fiber hanging down along the body like human hair.
Our Suri alpaca herd produces elite natural fiber that will enhance and assist in your art. Less than 10 per cent of alpacas in the world are suri alpacas. Today, the United States is home to approximately 10,000 Suri alpacas. Suri fiber is beautiful soft fiber that grows in long draping locks. Unlike mohair wool, the alpaca fiber comes in 26 natural colors, has no smell and no greasy feel.
All prepared fiber has been skirted (picked free if barn debris), hand combed, hand washed, in ph balanced shampoo, conditioned with ph balanced conditioner, air dried, hand combed, and packaged in 1 ounce bundles. All fibers are natural colors and are prepared chemical and dye free.
This is first shearing premium fiber. A lovely gift for the fiber artist in your life!
